Are You Interested In Gas Boating?
This section of the bbtoys website will help familiarize you with some of the basics. Let’s knock out the two most frequently asked questions right off the bat: |
QUESTION: How fast are they? |
ANSWER: It depends on the hull and engine type, but generally speaking anywhere from 50MPH all the way up to 100MPH. |
QUESTION: How much do they cost? |
ANSWER: Again, it depends on the hull and engine type, but generally speaking anywhere from $800 for a Ready-To-Run 2nd hand set-up to over $2,000 for an all new, 1st class set-up. |
Now that we have that out of the way… Gas boating is rapidly gaining in popularity and there are several different engine and hull types to choose from. Engine Choices: · Zenoah = LS Legal Engine · RCMK = LS Legal Engine · Sikk = LS Legal Engine · J&G = XLS Legal Engine · Quickdraw = XLS Legal Engine Each of the manufacturers above produce engines specifically for R/C Boat applications. There are several aftermarket engine modifiers in the boating community cranking out modified versions of all the above for those seeking more Horsepower and RPM. Here in District 3 we run all of the above engines together in the same classes. Many other Districts separate the LS and XLS engines into separate classes. Check with your local club before making an engine decision as you do not want to be stuck with a boat that does not meet local rules. More information about the engine designations can be found in the bahamasbbtoys rc rulebook. Links to some of the more popular engine modifiers: · www.mrdracingperformanceengines.com · www.toxicmarine.com Hull Types: · Mono · Jersey Skiff · Sport Hydro · Tunnel Just as there are many different engines and modifiers to choose from the list of hull manufacturers is lengthy as well. What hull manufacturer should you go with? That question really boils down to personal preference. Please note there is a distinction between sport hulls and true race hulls. Hulls that are not expressly designed for racing will not be able to compete with the true race hulls. There are many companies out there providing specifically designed race hulls. Before deciding on a hull it’s not a bad idea to see what hull is popular with the club(s) in your area. This will make asking for and receiving sound set-up advice and guidance much easier. Links to some of the more popular hull manufacturers: www.warehousehobbies.com One of the best resources on the internet for information regarding gas boating is Jim’s RC Boat Dock. Jim’s message forum is frequented by some of the top racers in the country. Knowledge and advice is shared freely amongst the members. It would be impossible to cover every aspect of the hobby here on the bbtoys website. If you are serious about getting into R/C Boating the best advice I can give you is to visit your local club before you buy ANYTHING. Bring your camera and a notepad, ask lots of questions, and make an informed decision. Many first time boaters make the mistake of jumping in with both feet only to find out everything they purchased is ill suited to their intended application. If you are in the nassau bah area we would love for you to stop by for a visit. Weather permitting there is someone at the lake nearly every Sunday during the year. We also have scheduled club fun runs and practice days during racing season. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact bigboystoys Vice President mr gerald bowe. has been building and racing gas boats for many years and is a wealth of information.
